OSWEGO COUNTY – Middle and high school students at Pulaski recently joined forces to celebrate Earth Week through a series of activities aimed at promoting environmental awareness, sustainability and community engagement.

The collaborative effort included members of the middle school and high school student government, Seeds for Success Club and the Science Club, along with support from faculty and staff. Together, the groups organized events throughout the week that highlighted both local environmental stewardship and in-school recycling initiatives.

Students participated in a “bike bus” to promote alternative transportation and reduce reliance on fossil fuels. Others took part in a cleanup effort at Selkirk Shores State Park, reinforcing the importance of maintaining natural spaces within the community.

As part of the educational component of the week, a guest speaker from SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry visited the school to discuss potential improvements to a school courtyard. The presentation introduced students to ecosystem design concepts and provided ideas for how the space could be transformed into a more sustainable and functional outdoor learning environment. Students also contributed feedback to help guide the future of the courtyard project.

Additional activities included a bird feeder-building session, during which students constructed and placed feeders around the school’s natural areas to encourage bird observation. An environmental movie day and trail mix-making activity offered further opportunities for students to engage with sustainability topics in a hands-on and interactive way.

Throughout the week, students and staff promoted the use of reusable water bottles and coffee mugs in an effort to reduce single-use plastic waste within the school.

The initiative also extended beyond the week’s events. A middle school and high school student collaborated to design and distribute a survey to gather feedback from the student body about recycling practices. Organizers plan to use the results to help improve waste disposal efforts across the district.

Through a combination of education, action and student leadership, Pulaski’s Earth Week activities emphasized the importance of environmental responsibility and empowered students to make a positive impact both in their school and the broader community.
