River’s End Bookstore and Oswego YMCA partner with Oswego Reads to present Harborfest Kids Fun Run

OSWEGO, New York – This year marks the 10th year that river’s end bookstore and the Oswego YMCA have joined together to present the Harborfest Kids Fun Run. The event will be held Saturday, July 24th, and children aged 4 to 12 are invited to participate. There is a minimal entry fee and the first 150 registrants will receive a free T-shirt.

“This year, we are partnering with Oswego Reads,” said Bill Reilly, owner of the river’s end bookstore, in Oswego. “We’re encouraging the entire community to read “Three Cups of Tea” by Greg Mortenson and to help us raise money for Pennies for Peace to build schools in Pakistan and Afghanistan for young boys and girls.”

Pennies for Peace is a program through Central Asia Institute (CAI), which was co-founded by Greg Mortenson. Two dollars of each registration fee will go to Pennies for Peace.

The start time for the fun run is 8 a.m. at the Oswego YMCA Armory. To register, pick up an application at the front desk of the Oswego YMCA, 249 West First Street. Registrations will be accepted up to July 23rd, the Friday before the race. There will be no registration on the day of the race.

“The fun run will be a great way to start the day on the Saturday of Harborfest,” said Reilly. “We hope you will join us and help our children become ‘Fit and Literate.’”

For more information, call the Oswego YMCA at 343-1981.

Three Cups of Tea is the selected book for the first community-wide reading event, sponsored by Pathfinder Bank and initiated by Oswego Reads. A kick-off event is slated for August 31st, in the Community Room at the Oswego Public Library.

Mortenson will be making an appearance in Oswego on October 28th at the SUNY Oswego Campus Center and tickets may be purchased online only by going to the link on the Oswego Reads Web site at www.oswegoreads.com. In addition, approximately 500 free student tickets are available for students residing in or attending the Oswego City School District when an adult ticket is purchased. This offer is not available online.

To acquire student tickets, it is necessary to contact the Oswego City School District Superintendent’s office between 7 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. at 341-2001, Monday through Friday. There is a limit of two free tickets and proof of residency is required.
