OSWEGO, NY – Literacy Volunteers of Oswego County Director Jane Murphy met with the Oswego Sunrise Rotary recently.
She updated the club on her organization’s programs and progress.
More than 17,000 people in Oswego County cannot read above the fifth grade level.
And, 84 percent of all Literacy Volunteer clients are between 19 and 59 years old.
For example, some factory workers that have lost their jobs need to improve their ability to read in order to find a new job.
People lack literacy skills for many reasons such as family problems, unaddressed learning disabilities and illness.
Many of the people you meet and know have problems reading, according to Murphy.
Literacy Volunteers has a waiting list of students.
They need new teachers.
It only requires two hours of your time after you complete 18 hours of training.
Even though teachers serve as instructors, you only need a high school diploma and are over 18 years old to help someone to learn to read.
