OSWEGO, NY – Shane Thompson, a lifelong resident of Oswego, has announced his candidacy for the Oswego Common Council representing the 7th Ward. Thompson was born and raised in the city, attending Kingsford Park Elementary, Oswego Middle School, and Oswego High School. He later earned a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science with a minor in Criminal Justice from the Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT).
Thompson currently holds a leadership role in automation at Novelis, where he applies innovative thinking and team-based solutions to industrial operations. He is also a New York State licensed security and alarm installer.
A longtime follower of local politics, Thompson believes now is the right time to give back to the community that shaped him. “Public service is about accountability, action, and listening to the people you represent. It’s not about titles, it’s about trust,” he said. “I have not received any party endorsements or accepted any donations, so residents of the 7th Ward can be confident that my only obligation is to them.”
While walking the ward and speaking with residents, Thompson has heard many concerns, from infrastructure to city spending, and is committed to actively addressing these issues. “People want to feel like their voices matter. I’ll be a councilor who shows up, responds, and works with residents to find real solutions.”
If elected, Thompson has pledged to donate his council salary to local nonprofit organizations that directly serve Oswego residents. “My parents taught us to give back. My siblings and I would shovel snow, rake leaves, carry groceries, whatever our neighbors needed, without expecting or accepting anything in return.”
Thompson has also made government transparency a central theme of his campaign. “We have council meetings that are short and vague. The public has every right to know how their money is being spent,” he said. “I’ll advocate for clearer communication, meaningful public engagement, and greater oversight.” He has also been transparent about his background, sharing his qualifications, values, and personal story honestly from the start.
Thompson lives on Thistle Drive with his son, Nicholas, who graduates from Oswego High School this month and will attend Franklin & Marshall College in Pennsylvania to study animal behavior.
