Southgate said she is glad she decided to settle in Oswego because “it is such a beautiful city. We have historic buildings and museums, parks within walking distance of most residential neighborhoods, good schools, friendly people, a lovely lakefront and gorgeous sunsets. What more could you ask for?”

“After retiring from teaching art at Oswego Middle School, I decided it was time to concentrate on creating a body of work I would be proud to exhibit and sell,” Southgate said.

She has been juried into shows all over North Central New York and received awards at Fulton Art Association, Salmon River Fine Art Center, Art Association of Oswego, Old Forge Art Center and the New York State Fair.

One of the founding members of Lakeside Artisans, Southgate, former executive director of Arts and Culture for Oswego County and past president of the Art Association of Oswego, has been actively involved in nurturing the burgeoning arts community in Oswego for the past decade.

She believes the major factor in forming the co-op was that Oswego already had the individual artisans and the non-profit arts presence.

It reached a point where a retail gallery space was needed also.

Lakeside Artisans fulfills that need.

Lakeside Artisans is located in Canal Commons, at 193 W. First St.

Gallery hours are Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Sunday from noon to 5 p.m.

Visitors to the gallery may fill out a card to be entered into a free drawing for an original collage entitled, “Purple Pleasure.”

The drawing will take place on Aug. 31 at 5 p.m. missing or outdated ad config
