St. Stephen’s Church in Phoenix will host an informational series that will be of interest to parents of middle school and high school students in the greater Phoenix area.  Presented by the Strong Families Safe Kids Parent Aide Program at Catholic Charities of Oswego County the series entitled Connecting with Kids for Parents, will consist of four two hour presentations designed specifically to help parents develop a better understanding of the pressures and stresses that middle school and high school students’ experience.

Kevin Slimmer, Supervisor of Catholic Charities’ Strong Families Safe Kids program explains.  “Parents will become more aware of the issues their children face that could attribute to: attitudes, physical ailments, appearance, relationships with friends and family, academics and a multitude of other problematic behaviors.  The workshop will offer parents the opportunity to see how their expectations of their children impact their teen(s) lives.”

St. Stephen’s Church in Phoenix is hosting the Connecting with Kids for Parents series at the request of Rev. Darr Schoenhofen, Pastor of St. Stephen’s.  “Father Darr thought that it would be a good idea to invite us to St. Stephen’s and offer this informational series to not only to the parishioners of St. Stephen’s, but to all parents in the greater Phoenix area regardless of their religious affiliation.  This enlightening and informative series will truly benefit the parents who choose to attend, and Father Darr and the people of St. Stephen’s Parish are encouraging all parents to attend as the series can have a positive impact on their parenting skills and their family,” said Slimmer.

Each presentation in the series will feature two short videos based on actual interviews with teens.  Participants will also receive resource information that coordinates with each video.

Videos in the Connecting with Kids for Parents series explore important character and safety issues facing today’s families.  Issues addressed include:

-         Great Expectations – How internal pressures and external stress lead to anxiety.

-         Character Traits  – Focusing on the importance of character development.

-         Ounce of Prevention – Focusing on bullying, teasing, threats and school safety.

-         Digital Revolution – Explores freedoms and dangers of technology and the internet.

-         Cultural Divide – Dealing with racism, prejudice and tolerance in daily life.

-         Addicted Kids – A study of childhood addictions to drugs, tobacco, alcohol, etc.

-         Innocence Lost – Probes the world of children who are striving to grow up to fast.

-         Behind the Wheel – Explores the dangers teen drivers encounter.

-         The Private Lives of Children – Explores privacy issues affecting kids and parents.

The Connecting with Kids for Parents informational series begins Monday, October 20th.  There will be presentations each Monday evening from 6:00 – 8:00 pm thru November 10th at St. Stephen’s Church, corner of Bridge and Main Streets in Phoenix.  Ken Dennison of Catholic Charities of Oswego County will facilitate the series.
