PHOENIX, NY – Emerson J. Dillon Middle School students recently crafted pottery bowls and will be raffling them off at the districtwide art show from 3:30 to 7 p.m. May 19 at John C. Birdlebough High School. All proceeds from the sales and raffles will go toward Erin’s Angels, a local nonprofit that helps feed families in need.
Empty Bowls for Erin’s Angels, a project pioneered by EJD art teachers Beth Pritchard and Brandi Finniss, encourages students to create various styles and types of bowls. The empty bowls are symbolic in their mission to raise money to fill others’ “bowls.”
During the month of March, 15 students stayed after school and volunteered their time to learn wheel throwing skills, press mold clay techniques and how to paint on Syracuse China.
“We have high hopes that this year we will eclipse the $370 we successfully raised last spring,” Pritchard and Finniss said. “I’m so proud of our hard-working art students who have put so much effort into combatting the burden of hunger that affects central New York. Connecting our art to benefit the larger community is rewarding for everyone involved!”
