OSWEGO – The Oswego Public Library had a fantastic summer reading program this year! The program’s theme, “Color Our World,” was a canvas for creativity. From the joy of splat art to the thrill of building balloon-powered cars, we explored the worlds of art, science, and our senses. The national Collaborative Summer Reading Program helps prevent the “summer slide,” where students can lose some of their gains in academic achievement, particularly in reading.
An astounding 439 children and teens enrolled in the Oswego Public Library’s summer reading program. Student readers surpassed last year’s reading records, with school-aged children and teens reading a total of 226,270 minutes. Preschool students read 8,248 books. Adults were able to participate as well! 250 adult members read 915 books this summer. All summer reading participants earned raffle tickets for prizes based on how much they read. Prizes were donated from a variety of wonderful local business sponsors.
In addition to the Collaborative Summer Reading Program, events at the library were nonstop all summer long. In just 41 days of service, the library offered 88 events that 3,622 community members participated in. From crafts, special guests, scavenger hunts, STEAM activities, and even a life-sized 30x40ft inflatable whale that took up the entire back of the library’s first floor, there was always something going on at the library.
Library Director Luke Connor would like to thank the community and our sponsors for their support in making this an unforgettable summer at the library. The library staff wishes all of the Oswego School District a wonderful school year. While library staff are already planning for next summer, they will also offer great programs all year round for community members.
