SUNY Oswego Lifestyles Center, peer educators recognized

OSWEGO — SUNY Oswego’s Lifestyles Center won the 2013 Area 11 Outstanding Chapter Award at the regional conference of the Bacchus Network, held March 8 and 9 at SUNY University of Buffalo. Area 11 encompasses colleges and universities in New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania.

The Bacchus Network promotes young adult leadership on healthy and safe lifestyle decisions concerning alcohol abuse, tobacco use, illegal drug use, unhealthy sexual practices and other high-risk behaviors.

SUNY Oswego has been affiliated with the network for about 17 years, said Shelly Sloan of the Lifestyles Center.

“Most of our peer educators are nationally certified as peer educators through the Bacchus Network,” she said.

Oswego students made presentations on their outreach efforts, and the Lifestyles Center had a table display at the conference outlining and explaining its program.

The Bacchus philosophy is that students can play a uniquely effective role in encouraging their peers to develop responsible habits and attitudes toward high-risk health and safety issues, according to its website.

Affiliates are concerned with the health of their students, their institution and their community. missing or outdated ad config
