SUNY Oswego Students Lend Helping Hands During Alternative Spring Break

OSWEGO, NY — Several area residents spent their 2018 spring break volunteering to help homeowners and provide human services in several communities around the nation through SUNY Oswego’s Alternative Spring Break program.

Madeline E. Perry of Thelma Road in Central Square, a junior childhood education major, volunteered with Outreach 326 in Dominican Republic teaching English to youths during school and providing education enrichment activities for after school.

Liberty Yalch of County Route 2 in Richland, a senior graphic design major, volunteered with Operation Northern Comfort in Texas helping with hurricane relief from Hurricane Harvey.

Hannah K. O’Brien of West Seneca Street in Oswego, a graduate student human-computer interaction major, volunteered with American Hiking Society in Virginia helping with trail maintenance and park preservation in Pocahontas State Park.

Holly Reitmeier of Leavitt Road in Oswego, a graduate student human-computer interaction major, volunteered with American Hiking Society in Virginia helping with trail maintenance and park preservation in Pocahontas State Park.

SUNY Oswego’s Office of Community Services offers Oswego students a variety of opportunities to volunteer and travel during Alternative Breaks in winter and spring. Ranging from international to domestic to local trips, these breaks allow students to explore while volunteering.

Dozens of students volunteered in March at Habitat for Humanity in Alabama; Project Outreach in Dominican Republic; Operation Northern Comfort, Texas; American Hiking Society, Virginia; and ARISE, Meals on Wheels, Seneca Hill and other Oswego County organizations.

Admission to SUNY Oswego is competitive.
