OSWEGO, NY – Jodi Mullen, PhD, LMHC, RPT-S, was presented the Play Therapy Professional Education & Training Award during the Oct. 14-19 Association for Play Therapy conference at the InterContinental Hotel in Addison, Texas.
Mullen is an assistant professor of counseling at the State University of New York, a licensed mental health counselor, and a registered play therapist-supervisor in Oswego.
The award acknowledges outstanding professional education and training that significantly develops, promotes, or advances the value of play, play therapy, and credentialed play therapists.
Mullen earned the award by teaching two play therapy graduate courses, introducing students to play therapy as a guest speaker in two other classes, designing a continuing education test by which play therapists can earn non-contact credit, providing substantial individual and group supervision, and supervising a student play therapy practicum.
She also authored a monthly Mining Reports for play therapists and co-authored both a peer-reviewed International Journal of Play Therapy article and an ACA Journal of Counseling and Human development article.
Play Therapy is a mental health modality; that is, a form of counseling or psychotherapy by which licensed mental health professionals use developmentally-appropriate play-based models and techniques to better communicate with and help clients achieve optimal mental health.
It is particularly effective with children because, just as adults use words to communicate ideas and feelings, children use play.
The Association for Play Therapy (APT) is a national professional society formed in 1982 to advance the play therapy modality and serve the research, training, and credentialing needs of its member counselors, marriage and family therapists, psychologists, and social workers.
Licensed mental health professionals may earn and maintain its Registered Play Therapist and Supervisor (RPT-S) credentials.
