Tobacco Free Network of CNY Observes World no Tobacco Day

OSWEGO COUNTY – World No Tobacco Day is a global effort to reduce the negative impact of tobacco in our communities.

The adverse effects of tobacco use are evident in our community from tobacco-related illnesses to tobacco litter among where our children play.

Not only smokers are affected by tobacco; according to the CDC, research has shown that 41,000 Americans die yearly due to secondhand smoke.

The World Health Organization is recognizing World No Tobacco Day 2017 as a day to acknowledge tobacco’s threat to both community and human development.

To create awareness for World No Tobacco Day, Tobacco Free Network is hosting the first annual Oswego County Community Forum at the Fulton Municipal Building Community Room on June 9 at 9 a.m.

The Tobacco Free Network of CNY and Reality Check staff will share Oswego County’s 2017 Adult Tobacco Survey results and share what they plan to do in the upcoming grant year. Light refreshments will be provided. RSVPs will be accepted until June 1 at 315-343-2344 ext. 10.

These Advancing Tobacco Free Communities programs are divisions of Integrated Community Planning of Oswego County, Inc., and funded by NYS DOH: Bureau of Tobacco Control grants working to change the community environment to support a statewide tobacco-free norm.

Tobacco Free Network of CNY is 1 of 25 statewide Advancing Tobacco-Free Communities contactors working to change the community environment to support New York State’s tobacco-free norm.

Our objectives are: Point of Sale: Reduce the negative impact of tobacco product marketing and price; Tobacco Free Outdoors: Increase the number of local laws and voluntary policies that prohibit tobacco use in outdoor areas; Multi-unit Housing: Decrease secondhand smoke exposure in multi-unit housing, with emphasis on policies that protect the health of low-income residents; Smoke Free Media: Promotes policies that reduce tobacco use imagery in youth-rated movies, the internet and social media.
