OSWEGO, NY – The United Way of Greater Oswego County will host the fifth annual Stone Soup Luncheon on Nov. 18 at St. Joseph’s Parish Center.
The United Way invites community members to come together to enjoy and kick-off the holiday season with a luncheon that will aid local food pantries.
Food pantries throughout Oswego County are feeling a strain this year and the holiday season will be prove to be especially challenging as they struggle to meet the increased demand for food subsidy in Oswego County.
The United Way will be accepting a donation of $5 per person to enjoy a delicious luncheon of Stone Soup.
Resource Development Director for the United Way of Greater Oswego County, Lois Luber, explains, “The story of Stone Soup dates back to an event that took place in post-war Europe when the residents of an impoverished village all contributed what they could to make a delicious meal that could feed the whole village. The moral of Stone Soup is that working together, with everyone contributing what they can a greater good can be achieved. It is a reflection of the United Way’s ‘Live United’ concept. We are all connected. When you reach out and help someone in need that action has an effect that reverberates throughout the community.”
The United Way’s Stone Soup Luncheon will also feature plenty of great door prizes, including a $25 gift cards from Key Bank and gift certificates to a number of area businesses.
Attendees are encouraged to bring a donation of non-perishable food.
All proceeds from the event, as well as the food that is collected, will be donated to local food pantries including Human Concerns Center, the Oswego and Fulton Salvation Armies, Catholic Charities of Oswego County and Oswego Mental Health Association.
“Our Stone Soup Luncheon is an excellent example of the ‘Live United’ concept as a number of caring local businesses have come forward to donate the food and beverages necessary. Canale’s Restaurant, Vona’s Restaurant and the American Foundry are providing our ‘Stone Soup.’ C’s Farms is providing the fixings for our salads. Bosco and Geers will provide fresh baked rolls. Cakes Galore and SUNY Oswego Auxiliary Services are donating the desserts. And, Tim Horton’s will be providing fresh brewed hot coffee,” added Luber.
In addition to the Stone Soup Luncheon, the United Way will be placing donation boxes at various locations including Wal-Mart in Oswego, Oswego Health and the Oswego Price Chopper.
Food donations will be collected through Nov. 20 and distributed to food pantries at the Human Concerns Center and the Oswego Salvation Army.
The United Way’s Stone Soup Luncheon is open to the public and will be start at 11:30 a.m.
Those unable to attend the luncheon but would like to donate food items may contact Helen Hoefer, director of Catholic Charities of Oswego County’s Emergency Services program, at 598-3980 for information on where to drop off non-perishable food donations throughout Oswego County.
