Phoenix, NY – The Village of Phoenix Police Department, Catholic Charities of Oswego County, Oswego County Sheriff’s Office and United Way of Greater Oswego County partnered again to deliver another successful “Shop With a Hero” event on Saturday, December 13, 2025, at Walmart in Fulton. The program supported children and families from Phoenix, Fulton, and Oswego with a holiday shopping experience alongside local community heroes.

Heroes volunteered from across Oswego County and Central New York. Participants included NY Senator Chris Ryan, police officers, firefighters, EMTs, correction officers, Oswego County Sheriff’s Office deputies, New York State Troopers, Border Patrol, SUNY Police, school district personnel, community leaders, local business owners, members of the legal field, Hades Hounds Lake City Club members, village trustees, and city council members.
The Village of Phoenix Police Department launched “Shop with a Cop” more than 7 years ago under the direction of Phoenix Police Officer Brian Fortino. The event has since expanded into the program now known as “Shop With a Hero.”
“This event is very special to me and brings a big smile to my face each year,” said Officer Brian Fortino. “I am grateful for the support of our leadership to coordinate this event and keep improving the experience for our kids. Our communities are filled with heroes who influence our youth. The turnout is outstanding, and the smiles are priceless.”
“Shop With a Hero is more than a shopping trip,” said Chief Ferazzoli of the Village of Phoenix Police Department. “It’s about connecting with our community, showing compassion, and helping families experience the true meaning of the holidays.”
This year’s program was powered by strong community support. Partners and supporters included Catholic Charities of Oswego County, United Way of Greater Oswego County,
Walmart, Chick-fil-A, Byrne Dairy, and many additional local businesses, organizations, and residents.
“The overwhelming support we received was instrumental in funding the project,” said Mary Margaret Pekow, Executive Director at Catholic Charities of Oswego County. “Sponsors turned holiday spirit into an unforgettable day for children who otherwise would not get this experience. Catholic Charities is thrilled to be a part of the Shop With A Hero Program, as it aligns with our mission of supporting families across Oswego County.”, added Pekow.
Village of Phoenix Mayor Brian Borchik added, “Being part of shop with a hero is humbling, inspiring, emotional and an honor. I’d like to thank Officer Brian Fortino of the Village of Phoenix Police Department for his hard work and dedication to the event and the children of our community”
Each child received a gift card and shopped side-by-side with a hero to select gifts for family, friends, and themselves. After shopping, children and heroes shared lunch provided by Chick-fil-A. Walmart employees and community volunteers wrapped gifts during the meal. Each child also received a stocking filled with holiday treats and visited Santa Claus.
“Shop With a Hero gives children the chance to shop for their families and meet positive mentors from the community,” said Jennifer Losurdo, Primary Violence Prevention Educator with Catholic Charities of Oswego County. “We look forward to carrying this tradition forward.”
