The Catskill Puppet Theater stopped by Volney Elementary School on Monday to present a live theatrical production to students in kindergarten through grade six.

The production, entitled The Town That Fought Hate, is based on Janice Cohn’s powerful book, The Christmas Menorahs: How a Town Fought Hate, that recounts the incidents of Billings, Montana, in 1993 where someone smashed a rock through the window of a Jewish family’s home.
Handcrafted, nearly life-size puppets brought to life the true story of a community that took a stand against bullies and haters that were threatening minority groups and the Jewish population.
The students learned through the production how hope, courage and unity can make a difference and how the Billings’ residents of all faiths and races united together to take a stand against hate and discrimination.
