Volunteer For Cleaner Water

Submitted article

On Wednesday August 13, 2008 the Lake Neatahwanta Reclamation Committee will host a storm drain stenciling campaign in the City of Fulton.  This event, which was rained out earlier in the summer, will target neighborhoods from Wickham St. west to Lake Neatahwanta.  Residents will find the message “Don’t Dump: Drains to Lake” spray painted next to the storm drains in their neighborhoods.  This is to remind us all that whatever is dumped down storm drains goes to nearby streams and lakes, NOT to a wastewater treatment plant.

Volunteers will also be distributing doorhangers on the day of the event to citizens in the stenciled neighborhoods. The doorhangers will provide more information about storm water pollution.

Lake Neatahwanta is listed on the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation’s (DEC) Impaired Waterbodies List.  In their assessment, DEC has listed storm sewers as one of the primary causes of the water quality impairments in Lake Neatahwanta.

Volunteers are needed to stencil and distribute doorhangers as part of this very important event.  Stenciling will begin at 9 am.  If you would like to sign up to volunteer please contact Katy Green, Lake Neatahwanta Project Coordinator at Cornell Cooperative Extension of Oswego County at 315-591-6516.
