WEST MONROE — Jamielyn Kelley of West Monroe was among more than 80 Alvernia University students who volunteered at the university’s annual Residence Hall Association Trunk-or-Treat on Tuesday, Oct. 27, in Reading, Pennsylvania, according to a university news release.
The event drew more than 450 attendees. Student volunteers, faculty and staff dressed in costumes and decorated vehicles to welcome local families.
“My favorite part about being part of Trunk or Treat was being able to be a small part of the excitement for the young trick-or-treaters in the community. I’ve always found this event to be so special because it’s one of the biggest events we hold that brings the community together on our campus,” Kelley said.
“I also loved seeing how excited all of the volunteers were to show off their trunks and greet the kids. Everyone was so creative.”
One group invited children into a “scream zone” alongside a Monsters, Inc.-themed car. Another brought a tractor-trailer truck and let children honk its horn. The university’s dining partner, Pack Hospitality, prepared a fall food truck menu for the event.
“It’s always an immense honor to be a part of such a wholesome community,” said Tim Hornbuckle, a 2023 Alvernia graduate, area coordinator and Residence Hall Association advisor.
“From seeing our spirited students and the engagement of faculty and staff members, to all of our smiling and joyous Reading neighbors that attended this year’s Trunk or Treat, the whole evening felt like a genuine and heartfelt space where everyone could enjoy the event. I’m looking forward to the continued growth of Alvernia University RHA’s Trunk or Treat for years to come.”
Students earned community service hours for participating, which count toward their graduation requirements.
“I loved getting to be involved in something that gave back to the community,” said volunteer Amory Cherfils. “Getting to see all of the creatively decorated cars and costumes was also super fun.”
