Willow Tree Farms Offering “Read and Ride” Summer Camps

Addison Stepien of Oswego rides “Wellington” recently at Willow Tree Farms. The Oswego-based equestrian center is now accepting children aged 6-10 years old for their “Read and Ride” camps, which begin July 12th and August 9th.

OSWEGO, New York – Willow Tree Farms, an Oswego-based equestrian center located on West Lake Road in the Town of Oswego, will be offering two “Read and Ride” camp sessions this summer beginning July 12th.

“We are very excited about hosting our camps again this summer,” said Willow Tree Farms Owner, Kristin Shanley. “The children really enjoyed themselves and learned a lot last year and we look forward to providing them the same experience this summer. ”

“Read and Ride” camps improve literacy skills by reading to the horses and participating in horse-related activities (including crafts, riding and caring for the horses).
Reading aloud is a critical component of early childhood literacy. The Willow Tree Summer Camp will provide every child with the opportunity to read aloud to a horse daily. Research has shown that reading to an animal increases confidence and generates excitement about reading. Combined with horse-themed books and writing assignments, the horses bring the sessions to life and provide text-to-world connections!

In addition to practicing their reading skills, children will learn about horsemanship, taking care of horses, and riding horses. They will participate in horse-themed games, activities, and crafts, and have many opportunities to pet the horses daily!

This year’s “Read and Ride” Camp Program is for children aged 6-10 and will include two sessions. The first will be held from Monday, July 12th through July 15th.  The 4-day camp will cost $120.00. The second camp session will be held Monday, August 9th through Friday August 12th. This 5-day camp will cost $150.00. Both Camp sessions are held in the mornings from 9:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.

A full-service equestrian center, Willow Tree Farms offers 19 stalls, an indoor/outdoor arena, multiple outdoor paddocks for daily turnout, a heated tack room with observation area, full bathroom, and an apple orchard.

Willow Tree Farms, located at 523 West Lake Road in Oswego, offers stalls available for boarding and year round riding lessons for individuals of all ages and families throughout the region.
