OSWEGO – In 1981 the United Nations established September 21 as the International Day of Peace. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres issued this statement: “On this International Day of Peace, let us all be inspired by the courage of those who champion peace in neighborhoods, classrooms and communities. And let’s call on world leaders to invest in a peaceful future for all people.”
The Oswego Rotary Club, in response to this call, is installing a Peace Pole and dedicating it on Saturday, September 26 at 4:30pm at Veterans Park in Oswego. One of Rotary’s focus areas is peace building and has a long history of promoting peacemaking both on a local and worldwide level. Rotarian Terry Gorman commented, “Our upcoming Peace Pole Dedication is an excellent way to promote ‘One world, many voices, one shared hope: peace.’”
Everyone has their own concept of what peace means. Rotarian Sabine Ingerson said, “Peace begins with each of us finding peace within ourselves and moving out to our family, community and beyond.”
Rotarian Steve Ingerson commented, “I believe peace isn’t the absence of conflict but rather the resolving of conflict. Until the reasons for conflict, either interpersonal or international, can be addressed and corrected, peace is almost impossible.”
The history of the Peace Pole itself goes back to a global initiative founded in 1955 by Masahisa Goi to spread the universal message: “May peace prevail on earth!” Today more than 250,000 Peace Poles stand worldwide as a reminder to cultivate peace in thought, word and action.”
