Youth Bureau to Host Summer Tennis Olympics on Saturday

Oswego, NY – This Saturday youth ages 5 through 12 will have the opportunity to compete in the USTA Summer Tennis Olympics.

Hosted by the Oswego City / County Youth Bureau, the event, which is free, offers participants the opportunity to enjoy friendly competitive tennis games and other activities.
AmeriCorps member, Morgan Mears who is coordinating the USTA Summer Tennis Olympics, is looking forward to the event and encourages youth to participate.

“It’s going to be a fun day of tennis games and instruction that will help youth gain a greater appreciation of the sport of tennis,” said Mears.

Made possible through a partnership between the Oswego City / County Youth Bureau and AmeriCorps, USTA trained AmeriCorps members, Mears and Leigh Bergman have brought the USTA Summer Tennis Program to 14 different sites including local recreation programs and school districts throughout Oswego County.

Participants enjoy weekly one-hour training sessions to introduce them to the game of tennis.

According to Mears, who is coordinating the USTA Summer Tennis Olympics; the goal of the program is to promote tennis and have youth enjoy some outside exercise during the summer.

“I’m looking forward to our USTA Summer Tennis Olympics event and encourage youth to participate and join us for a fun day of tennis games and instruction,” said Mears.

AmeriCorps is a network of national service programs that engages more than 50,000 Americans each year in intensive service to meet critical needs in education, public safety, health, and the environment.

AmeriCorps members serve through more than 2,100 nonprofits, pubic agencies, and faith-based organizations.  The Oswego County AmeriCorps Program focuses on services for children and families.

Members mentor youth, plan and supervise nutrition education and fitness activities and manage volunteers.  This year 63 members will serve at schools, libraries, recreation programs and human service agencies throughout Oswego County.

The Summer Tennis Olympics will be held Saturday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Charles E. Riley Elementary School, 269 E. Eighth St. in Oswego.

The event is free and registration is not necessary and all equipment will be provided.

Participants are welcome to bring their own tennis rackets if they like and are encouraged to wear sneakers and bring a bottle of water.

There will also be entertainment, free Popsicles, and prizes for all.  Parental supervision is required.
