OSWEGO, NY – Dr. Mary Walker will be at Oak Island, Waterloo, NY.
Dr. Walker – a.k.a. Marilyn Rowsey Dirk – a resident of Oswego, has been educating the public on the work that Dr. Walker dared to accomplish during the American Civil War.
Dr. Mary Edwards Walker is the sole woman to have been awarded the Medal of Honor.
That she received this prestigious award at a time when women’s roles were strictly circumscribed makes her especially significant.
Walker, born in the Town of Oswego, to “free thinking” abolitionist parents.
She graduated from Syracuse University medical school in 1855, at age 23, when only a handful of women in the country were qualified medical doctors.
At 2 p.m. on May 24 Marilyn will take to her role and talk about the trials and accomplishments of Dr. Mary Walker at Oak Island Pavilion Two as part of the Waterloo, NY, Memorial Commemoration May 23-25.
You may also see her at the Presenters Press Conference on the Waterloo Library Steps at 4:45 p.m.
