OSWEGO, NY – The Art Association of Oswego announces the opening of a solo exhibition by photographer Deborah Keppel Engelke in the Jo Hyse Gallery at the Oswego Civic Arts Center.

The exhibition is entitled Visual Narratives: Every Picture Tells a Story.

The show will open with a reception for the artist on Oct. 25 from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Art Center.

Engelke was born in Syracuse, but has lived in Oswego for the last 20 years.

She has attended Lemoyne College and SUNY Oswego, where she earned her MA in 1997.

She started Time & Again Books (East Utica Street) in 2000.

She recounts how she got into photography: “I bought my first camera, a brownie knock-off, and started taking what I now term impressionistic photographs, back in 1961 (although I was going for more realistic images). I was in elementary school. After three courses in college, one in the art department, two in the audio-visual department, my work improved. Visiting major galleries and museums in the northeast for decades, I have found my own style, or visual ‘voice,’ if you will. But it was not until I took another dozen night classes through BOCES Evening Division, several with regionally recognized professional photographers, that I gained confidence in my own work.”

“For the past nine years, having passed the half-century mark, I am finally finding the courage to go outside my comfort zone to show my work. What I am finding is that my photographs are an extension of my writing, and each photo I take captures a story I wish to tell,” she continued.

The show will continue until Nov. 23.

Regular gallery hours are from 2-5 p.m. on weekends or by appointment.

Group tours are welcome.

The Oswego Civic Arts Center is located at the northernmost end of East Fourth Street in Oswego.
