OSWEGO – The Oswego Players announce auditions for their December holiday production, Andrew J. Fenady’s “Yes Virginia, there is a Santa Claus.” Auditions will be held on Wednesday, Oct. 9 from 5 to 6:30 p.m. and Sunday, Oct. 13 from noon to 1:30 p.m. at the Francis Marion Brown Theater on Barbara Donahue Drive in Oswego.

There are parts for eight women and 17 men, with numerous roles that could be any gender. These parts are available for those aged 20 to 60. There are also several roles for children aged 5 to 12.

This holiday play is inspired by a simple, poignant letter written over 100 years ago by 8-year-old Virginia O’Hanlon to the editor of “The New York Sun” and by the timeless editorial response printed on the front page of the publication.

Virginia wondered and wrote: “Dear editor, I am 8 years old. Some of my little friends say there is no Santa Claus. Papa says if you see it in ‘The Sun,” it’s so. Please tell me the truth. Is there a Santa Claus?”

Ed Mitchell, “New York Sun’s” editor, gives the assignment of answering Virginia’s letter to Frank Church, who, until his wife and baby died last Christmas Eve, was the paper’s best and most dependable reporter. “Yes Virginia, there is a Santa Claus” is a play for young and old, magically reaffirming life’s highest beauty and joy— “the eternal light with which childhood fills the world.”

Show dates for “Yes Virginia, there is a Santa Claus” are Dec. 6-8 and 13-15. The production is directed by Jennifer Hitchcock and presented by special arrangement with The Dramatic Publishing Company of Woodstock, Illinois.
