OSWEGO COUNTY – The Mexico Academy & Central School District has once again been recognized by the NAMM Foundation as one of the Best Communities for Music Education, highlighting its ongoing dedication to providing high-quality music opportunities for students.

This marks the 14th consecutive year the district has earned the national distinction, placing it among just over 1,000 school districts across the country to receive the honor.

“Being named a Best Community for Music Education for the 14th consecutive year is a powerful testament to our community’s support for the arts and the passion and professionalism of our music educators,” said Superintendent Dr. Donna Runner.

“This award reflects not only the strength of our music program, but also the commitment of our educators and the continued support from our community,” added Kevin Upcraft, Visual and Performing Arts Director at MACS and middle school music teacher.

The Mexico Academy & Central School District offers a comprehensive music program, including classroom instruction for grades K–12, instrumental opportunities for grades 4–12 and choral programs for grades 3–12. All students in grades K–8 participate in music each year.

“When you think of Mexico schools, one of the first things that comes to mind is its rich and deeply rooted musical traditions,” Runner said. “I commend our music educators across the district and thank our community for championing the arts.”

To be considered for the designation, the district submitted detailed information about its music program, including funding, participation rates, instructional time, facilities and community engagement. The responses were reviewed and verified by the Music Research Institute at the University of Kansas.

Now in its 27th year, the Best Communities for Music Education program continues to recognize districts nationwide for their commitment to ensuring all students have access to music as part of a well-rounded education.
