Jazz Guitar Great Sparks Returns To Jazz Fest

FULTON, NY – One of the highlights of last year’s Jazz Fest, the legendary jazz guitarist, Melvin Sparks, the originator of soul jazz, old school acid jazz, and barbecue funk jazz, will return to ignite Fulton’s Jazz Fest with another electrifying performance on Aug. 14 at 6:30 p.m.

The Master of the Groove, Sparks has spent the last 30 years playing with some of greatest jazz musicians in the world including David “Fathead” Newman, Lou Donaldson, Hank Crawford, Reuben Wilson and John Patton.

A much sought-after studio player, Sparks defined the jazz-guitar sound of a generation as he laid his signature guitar work on more than a hundred albums by other musicians while serving as a session man for Blue Note and Prestige Records.

He has also recorded seven of his own albums.

He continues to perform with the current jazz greats of the day and is breaking out his legendary guitar wizardry with younger bands and artists such as Galatic, Derek Trucks, and The Greyboy Allstars to name a few.

Possessing some of the most inspiring and soul-energizing guitar chops on the planet, Sparks is admired by many performers, and audiences old and young alike, and continues to be a hidden treasure for music fans worldwide.

Coordinated by the Greater Oswego-Fulton Chamber of Commerce and the city of Fulton, and presented by Eagle Beverage and Pathfinder Bank, Fulton’s Jazz Fest, which features two days of food, fun and great music, will be held Aug. 13 from 5:30 – 11:30 p.m. and Aug. 14 from 5 – 11:30 p.m. behind the Fulton War Memorial along C.W. Barrett Drive on the shores of Lake Neatahwanta.

Other performers scheduled to appear include The Cortini Brothers with renown vocalists, Joanna Jewett and Tommy Ciappa, at 6:30 p.m. and Atlas at 8 p.m. on Aug. 13; jazz vocalist, Nancy Kelly at 5 p.m. and Soul Injection at 8 p.m. on Aug. 14.

Food and refreshments will be available both days from some of the area’s finest eateries.

All performances are free and open to the public.
