The Oswego Jazz Project has launched its Wednesday night performances at Patz Restaurant, 1 Basin St. in Oswego.
Admission-free shows by the SUNY Oswego faculty-student combo will run from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. most Wednesdays, except during weeks they would conflict with concerts in the college’s Ke-Nekt Chamber Music Series (Sept. 17, Oct. 22 and Nov. 19 during the fall semester).
OJP was the brainchild of SUNY Oswego music faculty members Robert Auler, who plays keyboards, and drummer Eric Schmitz. The core group includes fellow SUNY Oswego music faculty member Trevor Jorgensen on saxophone and bassist Max McKee, a SUNY Oswego graduate.
Live OJP performances also showcase many student musicians from SUNY Oswego to give them experience playing — and improvising — live in a receptive setting. Community members are also invited to bring their instruments and sit in during the second set, Schmitz said.
In addition to developing a regional following, the Oswego Jazz Project has produced two albums, a self-titled effort in 2007 and 2008’s “And the Time Is Now,” and performed on two broadcasts of the popular National Public Radio show “Says You.”
