Paul Garland Exhibition Opens at the Art Association of Oswego on September 14th

OSWEGO – The Art Association of Oswego (AAO) is pleased to announce the upcoming opening of a new exhibition: “IF IT SPEAKS. LISTEN” by Paul Garland showing in the first floor’s Kirk Beason Gallery. An opening reception for the exhibition is scheduled for Saturday, September 14th, 7-9 pm. The exhibition runs through October 13th. Also continuing through October 13th in the second floor’s Timothy McHenry Gallery is “Lost but Not Forgotten, An Exhibition of Artwork by Special Friends and Family That We Have Lost”

Paul Garland returns to AAO for a solo exhibition of 23 new landscape paintings titled IF IT SPEAKS. LISTEN. Garland’s first exhibition of paintings at AAO, then known as the Oswego Art Guild, was a two-person show with fellow SUNY Oswego art professor Richard Zakin in 1969. Since then Garland has had many solo exhibitions in major cities, including NYC, Toronto, Buffalo and Chicago. In 2022 Rochester’s highly regarded museum, the Memorial Art Gallery, presented a career survey exhibition, Intuitive Progression, that showcased Paul’s paintings from 1968 through 2022. With the new landscape paintings Garland responds to our extraordinary upstate environment. During his daily walks, often in Fair Haven State Park, sudden visual jolts SPEAK to him. Mixed metaphors be damned, the jolts are found in unexpected places and in unexpected ways. The speaking jolts may be hushed whispers or
searing screams. Some of these experiences lead directly to paintings.

AAO is a non-profit organization that consistently contributes to Oswego’s cultural landscape. Public events include but are not limited to free art exhibitions and low-cost community art classes. Each week Art Association of Oswego’s Pottery Open Studio is offered Monday and Thursdays 5 -8pm and Open Painting Studio is offered Wednesdays at 10am. The Art Association of Oswego and the Frances Marion Brown Theater are located at 30 Barbara Donahue Drive across from the parking lot of Fort Ontario.
