OSWEGO – Deborah Engelke, a SUNY Oswego alumna, local businesswoman and photographer, will display her “visual poems” from May 17 to July 7, at Oswego State Downtown.

A free public artist’s reception from 5 to 7 p.m. May 18 will officially open the photography exhibition at the downtown branch of the College Store and Tyler Art Gallery, corner of Bridge and West First streets.
“Poetry can take a variety of forms,” said Engelke, who received her bachelor’s and master’s degrees in English at SUNY Oswego. “Whereas words express thoughts with language, photos can express thoughts visually. I try to capture a thought, a moment, a visual poem with my shots.”
Engelke, owner of Time and Again Books and Tea, 18, E. Utica St. in Oswego, focuses on everyday surroundings, including flowers, architecture and manmade objects in a resting position.
Oswego State Downtown, 216-4985 or [email protected], is open noon to 5 p.m. Wednesday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Thursday (until 8 p.m. beginning June 3), 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday and 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday.
Call Tyler Art Gallery at 312-2112 for more information about the exhibition.
