OSWEGO – Charles E. Riley Elementary School’s cafeteria recently transformed into a winter wonderland for sixth grade students, during the grade level’s annual surprise snowball fight.
More than 100 sparkly, foam snowballs flew across the cafeteria as students teamed up against each other, their teachers and Principal Dr. Linda Doty.
The fun surprise for the two classes has been an undertaking of Dr. Doty, who reminded the sixth graders that even after a lot of hard work to succeed in school, they should stop for a moment to simply enjoy being a kid.
“The expectations for sixth graders are ‘You’re all grown up now,’” she said. “This is for them to remember school is enjoyable every single day.”
It is also the only time “snow” is OK to fly in/around school and at her, she said.
Sixth grade teacher Chris Trapasso reminded the students that it is a privilege to be rewarded with fun activities.
Throughout the year if the sixth graders continue great effort and meet academic and behavioral expectations, they also may be rewarded with other fun activities, such as human hungry hippos.
Each student left feeling excited and united, which is something Dr. Doty said she strives for every CER student.
