Fulton Block Builders Explain The Block Challenge

FULTON, NY – Many people have been asking how the Fulton Block Challenge Grants will work and what they can do to help.

Since it is just over a month before the eligible blocks will be announced (March 1, 2017), there are things you can be doing today to get ready.

First and foremost, start talking to your neighbors, at least 50% of the block have to agree to participate.

“Participate,” what exactly does that mean? That means that 50% of the homeowners in one block (a block can encompass both sides of the street or be one contiguous block) have to agree to make improvements to the exterior of their house in the summer/fall of 2017 AND plan a block event with your neighbors to celebrate your completed work.

All work must be completed by October 31, 2017.

The benefits to participation include dollar for dollar matching funds, up to $1,000.00. Houses on corners and intersections may be eligible for a bonus. If approved historical paint schemes are used, another bonus may apply.

And, Building Block participants will have access to discounts from sponsoring hardware stores and garden centers.

Wow, that’s a lot of benefit you say, and we say yes!

You may be wondering if you have to be a homeowner and the answer is yes, but tenants can encourage their landlord to participate.

You may be wondering what kinds of work can be done. The answer to this is really up to the block participants but examples include: painting, porch repair, mailboxes, street lights, landscaping, soffit repair, new doors, new windows, flowers and MORE.
