JJ Courcy came into the Fulton Speedway Schneider Brothers 200 weekend expecting a good run in the 25 lap World Products IMCA Modified Empire Series. What the Mexico, NY came away with was a trip to victory lane as the IMCA season starts to wind down.
Les Hubbard got the jump on the field going into turn one to open the 25 lap main. By time Hubbard got to turns three and four he had company as Bob Banks pulled even with Hubbard, Hubbard was scored the leader at the start finish line.
One lap later Banks and Rich Keller blew by Hubbard as they ran side by for the top spot. Keller was barely scored in the top spot at the line.
On lap 4 the first caution of the race flew as one of the fastest cars on the Empire Series, Rob Keller blew a tire in turns three and four. Keller made it pit-side and would return.
When the green came back out Rich Keller took command of the race as Banks and Courcy ran door handle to door handle for the second spot.
Another quick yellow came out on lap 6 to tighten up the field. On the restart Keller and Courcy took off to wage their own battle for the lead. Gary Roberts now made his presence known as he fought with Banks for the third spot.
With 10 laps in Keller maintained a three car advantage over Courcy, Roberts ran alone in third as Banks and Kevan Cook ran in the top five.
At the halfway point Keller still held onto a slight lead over Courcy, Banks, Cook and Roberts were still in contention in the top five.
After running 5 laps nose to tail and side by side Courcy found the bite he needed on the bottom as he went by Keller to take his first lead of the race.
From there Courcy would be the first under the checkers. Behind Courcy a wild scramble ensued on the final lap coming out of turn four for the checkers. Cook who was running for a top finish got turned around as cars darted around for a top finish. After the call by the starter Gary Roberts came home second, followed by Bob Banks, Aaron Jacobs and Les Hubbard. The second five were, Mike Stoddard, Ken Rogers, Kyle Lewis, Tyler Stoddard and Kevan Cook.
“This is awesome,” said Courcy after his win. “I thought I was done, Rob (Keller) blew a tire and got into me, I was bummed. The car stayed together and got the job done. It was awesome racing with Rich (Keller) I hope the fans enjoyed it.”
“This is awesome it’s three wins in eight races. Rich was fast up top so I thought I’d go up there and see what he had. That didn’t work for me. The bottom came in for me and here we are,” victory lane.
The next stop on the World Products IMCA Modifed Empire Series will be this Thursday night, October 9 at Can-Am Speedway in LaFargeville , NY.
