The Oswego State women’s soccer continued to be able to find the back of the net in a 6-0 win over Cazenovia College on Thursday afternoon in Oswego. The Lakers’ depth proved too be much for the small Wildcat roster as four different players scored to give Oswego a decisive 4-0 halftime lead en route to the victory.
Michelle Bateman (Fr., Fulton, N.Y.) put Coach Brian McGrane’s squad on the scoreboard 5:10 into the game for her third goal of the season. The Lakers dominated possession time throughout game and continually found ways to test Cazenovia goalkeeper Brittany Westcott. Oswego added its second goal when Bateman dribbled through traffic on the left side of the field before finding Toby Klein (Jr., Westbury, N.Y.) for the score at the 17:23 mark.
It would not be long before the third goal was scored after Leah Malbeuf (Fr., Harrisville, N.Y.) made a nifty move to get the ball past Westcott at the top of the penalty box for the wide open shot. Scoring for the frame was not complete until Tricia Sullivan (Sr., Copenhagen, N.Y.) tallied her first goal of the year as she was falling on her back inside the middle of the penalty box, giving the Lakers a 4-0 advantage. The second half in a similar fashion as Oswego State dictated play for most of the period before striking again. Bateman went deep into the Wildcat end nearly at the endline before she roped a pass in front of the net to Laura Ambron (So., Fishkill, N.Y.) near the right post for the easy tap-in goal at 63:35. The final goal came from the foot of Jackie Thibault (Fr., Clifton Park, N.Y.) from mid-range as her shot went just under the crossbar.
Laker goalkeeper Christina Fergosi (Fr., Massapequa, N.Y.) went untested for the second straight game as she made two saves compared to her counterpart, Brittany Westcott, who made 21 saves.
Oswego State moves to 2-0-0 overall, while Cazenovia dropped to 0-1-0. The Lakers take on SUNYIT on Saturday at 1 p.m. in Oswego.
