OSWEGO — The award-winning Gallim Dance will break the boundaries of contemporary dance in a display of color, kinetics and culture Friday, Feb. 18, in a performance of “I Can See Myself in Your Pupil” at SUNY Oswego.
The Artswego Performing Arts Series presentation will begin at 7:30 p.m. in Tyler Hall’s Waterman Theatre.
Juilliard graduate Andrea Miller’s New York-based company has been hailed for morphing physicality and technical virtuosity in its productions.
Recently, the National Dance Project selected Miller’s 2008 work “Blush” for a 2011-12 Touring Award, and the company has received active support from organizations such as the American Music Center, Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS and the Jerome Foundation, among others.
“I Can See Myself in Your Pupil” is a suite of dances set to music from Israel, Mexico, Australia, Italy and Denmark. With a cast of seven dancers wearing a rotation of colorful costumes, “Pupil” follows the development of two cells through the organization and chaos of evolution.
Based in wildly quirky and demanding movement, the show examines the joy of movement and guides the audience through a visual discussion of the self and its dialogue with identity, sensuality and the search for meaning.
As Miller has said, “The mission of Gallim Dance is to play inside the imagination, to find juxtapositions of the mind and body that resonate in the soul, to investigate our limitations and pleasures, and to realize the endless human capacity for inspiration.”
Tickets for the performance are $20 ($15 for seniors 60 and older and SUNY Oswego faculty and staff; $7 for students). Tickets are available at all SUNY Oswego box office locations, online at http://tickets.oswego.edu or by calling (315) 312-2141. Parking is free in campus lots on evenings and weekends.
Along with the performance, Miller will host a number of master and composition dance classes that will explore how inspiration translates into the creation of movement and composition. Classes are free with SUNY Oswego ID, and $15 for all others. To register or for more information contact [email protected] or call (315) 312-4581.
This project is presented by SUNY Oswego’s Artswego and the Student Association Programming Board.
