Graham, Bond Top the Charts in Budweiser Classic Week Wednesday Test Session

OSWEGO, NY – Eleven more race cars took to Oswego Speedway on Wednesday for Budweiser International Classic Week testing at the ‘Steel Palace’ with Ray Graham leading the Supermodified charts and Mike Bond topping the SBS racers in attendance.

Times dropped considerably on Wednesday, compared to the Tuesday evening test session.

Defending Budweiser International Classic champion, Bob Bond, was second fastest during Wednesday testing at Oswego Speedway.

Defending Budweiser International Classic champion, Bob Bond, was second fastest during Wednesday testing at Oswego Speedway.

Graham, driving the latest Xtreme chassis No. 21, turned in the fastest lap of the week Wednesday at 16.623 at 135 mph.  Comfortable with his ride, attention turned to one of his three teammates for the week, Bobby Santos.

Santos was behind the wheel of the Corr/Pak No. 11, driven earlier this season by Jessica Zemken, and Santos wasted little time getting comfortable.

In his first session on track Santos cranked a 17.0 and by the end of his session he had worked down to 16.735 at 134 mph, in only 35 laps on the Speedway.  Santos would end the day third fastest on the Supermodified charts behind Graham and current Speedway track record holder, Bob Bond.

Like the other top contenders, Bond ran under 40 laps on Wednesday but joined Graham in the 16.6 second bracket. The No. 47 topped out at 16.675, the second fastest time of Classic week thus far.

Brian Sobus made his return after an incident two weeks ago, and looked stout in the No. 79.  Sobus clocked in fourth fastest of the week so far with a lap of 16.832 in the former Gruel No. 50 from past years. Looking to make his first official start of the season in Sunday’s Classic, Sobus has never finished outside of the top ten in three previous Classic starts.

Just behind Sobus on the charts was another welcome sight in Jeff Abold. The Abold No. 05 has been hit and miss this season, after leading 41 laps of the season opener back in May. Struggling all season with various issues on the No. 05, the Abold team seems to have them cured as Jeff ran a lap of 16.881 on Wednesday, in just seven laps.

Dan Connors Jr. and Jerry Curran followed Abold on the charts, each under the 17 second bracket.

Ohio shoe Gene Lee Gibson was also in attendance, turning a fast lap of 17.518.

Lou LeVea Jr. rounded out the Supermodified lineup on Wednesday.

The returning Mike Bond was the fastest SBS on the charts Wednesday and also the fastest of the week so far at 18.926. Bond is a sure fire favorite for a ‘Super 6’ position during tomorrow night’s SBS time trials.

Dalton Doyle’s No. 01 SBS was also in attendance Wednesday, but ended the day in the outside third turn foam with right front damage. Supermodified ace Michael Barnes was at the wheel, shaking the car down for Doyle in the incident.

One car noticeably missing from the session was the brand new Nicotra Racing No. 6, to be piloted by Davey Hamilton. Despite not being at the track on Wednesday, the No. 6 is on the Speedway testing during the Thursday 8-11 a.m. session with Otto Sitterly at the wheel.
