Justin White Receives Annual Tourism Ambassador Award

OSWEGO COUNTY – The Oswego County Tourism Advisory Council recently awarded its 2017 Tourism Ambassador Hall of Fame Award to Oswego County Historian Justin White.

David Rath, chairman of the Tourism Advisory Council; County Legislator Roy E. Reehil, District 5, chairman of the County Legislature’s Economic Development and Planning Committee; David Turner, director of the Oswego County Community Development, Tourism and Planning Department; and Janet Clerkin, tourism and public information coordinator, presented the award at the council’s December meeting.

“Each year, this recognition is awarded to an individual, business or organization for their extraordinary support and commitment of time and energy to the Oswego County tourism industry,” said Rath. “Justin is always ready to share his expertise in tourism-related projects and events. With this award, we thank him for his ardent dedication and commitment to promoting heritage tourism in Oswego County.”

White is County Historian and administrator of the Oswego County Records Center.

He has served in leadership roles in several heritage organizations including as board president for the Oswego County Historical Society and the Heritage Foundation of Oswego County and as trustee of the Oswego Town Historical Society.

White has presented countless lectures on local history topics, led history tours for travel writers and visiting groups, and introduced thousands of local students to the fascinating history in their own back yard.

He welcomes visitors to the Richardson-Bates House Museum in Oswego, home to the Oswego County Historical Society, and his passion for history helped earn a place for Oswego on the History Channel’s museum series.

“Justin’s wealth of knowledge of Oswego County history, his attention to detail, and his sharp editing skills were invaluable in the publication of the Oswego County bicentennial history book, as well as commemorating the 2016 bicentennial,” said Oswego County Tourism and Public Information Coordinator Janet Clerkin.

The Tourism Advisory Council has presented the Tourism Ambassador Awards since 1995.

Mulcahey, District 15, Linda Middleton; Oswego County Snowmobile Association, and Arlene Johnson in 2015; Oswego County Legislator Margaret Kastler, District 1, Carole Sponable, and Winona Forest Recreation Association in 2014; Robert Green, James Hotchkiss, and Oswego County Legislator Morris Sorbello, District 23 in 2013; Oswego County legislators Shane Broadwell, District 17 and Shawn Doyle, District 3 in 2012; Bridgehouse Brats of Phoenix, Richard and Naneen Drosse, and Fred Kuepper, 2011; Barbara Lighthall, The Palladium-Times, and Fran Verdoliva, 2010; Margaret Clerkin, Oswego County Legislator Louella LeClair, District 25, and Mercedes Niess in 2009; David Rath and James Wright in 2008; Paul Lear in 2007; Mike Redding in 2006; Hank Cosselman, Donald Feck and Doug Ververs in 2005; Fred Crisafulli in 2002; Capt. The council has also presented honorary lifetime achievement awards to Charles Krupke in 2007; Lillian Harter in 2012; and Rose Driscoll in 2014.

Members of the Tourism Advisory Council are appointed by the Oswego County Legislature Chairman and represent businesses, recreational and historic sites and museums, events and attractions throughout Oswego County.
