POTSDAM – Forward Kassie Kleine (Jr., Cazenovia, N.Y.) scored both goals for the Oswego State women’s soccer team, leading the Lakers to a 2-0 victory at Clarkson on Tuesday afternoon in the team’s season finale.
Kleine tallied a goal in each half, as the Lakers finished the season 10-8-0 overall, their best season since 2000, when the Lakers finished 11-10-0 overall. Oswego State finished with an 8-1-0 record in non-conference play, with the only loss coming in double overtime against Hamilton College on Sept. 6.
Scoreless through the first 15 minutes of the first half, the Lakers struck first at 16:23 on Kleine’s first goal of the game and sixth of the season. Forward Nikki Liadka (So., Liverpool, N.Y.) registered one of five shots on goal in the first half on Clarkson goalkeeper Kim Kenline, but Kenline made the save. Kleine collected the rebound in the box and beat Kenline for the game’s first goal. Liadka was credited with the assist on the scoring play.
Kleine struck again midway through the second half to give the Lakers a two-goal advantage. Liadka served a cross that found Kleine at the top of the box, who fired a shot from 18 yards past goalkeeper Brianna Thibeau, who replaced Kenline at halftime. Liadka finished the game with two assists, seven shots and four shots on goal. Kleine’s seventh goal of the season is second on the team, passing forward Shelly Bateman (Jr., Fulton, N.Y.), who finished the season with six goals.
The Lakers outshot Clarkson 18-11 in the game and held a 10-5 advantage in shots on goal. Oswego State limited Clarkson to just one corner kick, while having five opportunities of their own.
Oswego State goalkeeper Emily Varonier (Jr., Miller Place, N.Y.) made five saves in net for the Lakers, earning her fourth shutout and ninth win of the season.
