OSWEGO, NY – The Oswego High School Lady Bucs hockey team did not surrender a goal in two days as they captured the New York State Girls’ Hockey crown on Saturday before an enthusiastic crowd in Skaneateles.
The Lady Bucs scored a 4-0 title game win over Alexandria Bay and had advanced to the finals with a 3-0 shutout over host Skeanteles.
Oswego’s Taylar Cianfarano scored three goals in the title game while Devyn Hutcheson scored the other.
Goalie Madisyn Whalen chalked up her second consecutive shutout in tournament action with 29 saves in the championship game.
The teams fought through a scoreless first period with both getting excellent scoring chances.
In the second back to back goals within two minutes of one another gave the Bucs the 2-0 advantage and that was all that was needed.
Cianfarano was named the tournament most valuable player while other Bucs selected to the all tournament team were Devyn Hutcheson, Kaitlin Friel along with goalie Madisyn Whalen.
The championship roster included Whitney Daino, Erika Lazzaro, Sage Dudley, Taylar Cianfarano, Kaitlin Friel, Sarah Mancuso, Danielle Faivus, Caroline Dougherty, Karissa Favata, Taite Phillips, Sarah Gosek, Lainey Celeste, Tessa Opet, Devyn Hutcheson, Caty Darling, Madisyn Whalen and Allison Yule.
Coaches included head coach Dan Bartlett and assistants Beth Arduini and Andrew Lazzaro.
In other weekend sports action swimmer Drake Becksted is headed for the state tournament after setting two meet records in the Section III Class A action on Friday.
On Saturday Becksted won the 50 free in 21.21 and the 100 free in 46.77 and is headed for the state meet.
On the mat Oswego 189 pounder Shane Bartrum finished third in the Section III action at Utica.
The Oswego High School girls’ varsity basketball team and boys’ cagers finished out the regular season with wins over Rome Free Academy.
