Late Game Heroics Give Oswego State Men’s Soccer 2-1 Win At Potsdam

Senior Jim Mertz’s (Rochester, N.Y.) goal with 21 seconds remaining sent the Oswego State men’s soccer team into overtime with Potsdam, where Felipe Cavalcanti (Jr., Valatie, N.Y.) scored his second overtime goal in as many games to give the Lakers a 2-1 win on Saturday.

Oswego State, which is now 3-6-0 overall, moved to 2-1-0 in the SUNY Athletic Conference, while Potsdam fell to 3-7-1 overall and 1-2-0 in the league.

After a scoreless first half, the Bears seized a 1-0 edge when Tim Ciampa scored an unassisted goal in the 60th minute, which was pivotal in the defensive contest. Potsdam looked to be head towards the victory when Jim Mertz tallied his second goal of the season at the 89:39 mark to send the game into overtime.

In overtime, Bryan Pacchiana (So., Cortlandt Manor, N.Y.) and Tony Greene (Sr., Schenectady, N.Y.) each put shots on goal, but Bear goalkeeper Joseph Glackin came up with the saves. However, the third shot of the period was the charm as Mertz found Felipe Cavalcanti for the game-winning goal.

The Lakers will look to extend their winning streak against Buffalo State on Friday, Oct. 9 at 4 p.m in Buffalo.
