Late Goal Sinks Oswego State women’s soccer team

OSWEGO, N.Y. – The Oswego State women’s soccer team (3-3-0, 0-1-0 SUNYAC) fought through bad weather to keep pace with Oneonta (4-2-1, 1-0-0), but came up empty as the Red Dragons scored in the final five minutes of regulation.

During the first half, both teams played good defense, as neither squad had good looks at the net with possession going back-and-forth. At halftime, the game was delayed due to thunder in the area.

When the game resumed during rain, the game became more aggressive, as both teams trying to put one on the board before the field became too slippery.

The Lakers’ best attempt came off the foot of Bri Dolan (So., Fayetteville, N.Y.) with about 13 minutes remaining in regulation. Georgia Traynor (So., Tomkins Cove, N.Y.) took a corner kick, which was tipped by the Oneonta goalie, Kelley Murphy. The ball was then fumbled at the side of the net. Dolan took the shot, which was saved by Murphy. Oswego State made another attempt right after, with Kleine taking a shot that was stopped.

Less than 30 seconds after Oswego State’s attempt, Oneonta put the ball into the box resulting in the first goal of the game. Melissa Guglielmo took a pass from Kayla Brantmeyer to score for the visiting team. The Lakers were unable to generate any quality scoring chances the rest of the way.

Murphy finished with eight saves, while Emily Varonier (Sr., Miller Place, N.Y.) made three in the loss.

Oswego State looks to add a win tomorrow at 11 a.m. (note time change) against New Paltz at Laker Soccer Field.
