Police allege a Watertown man tried to buy the silence of the child he’s accused of having raped.

In October, 2011, the Oswego County Sheriff’s Department arrested Matthew Roof, who was living on Little Canada Rd. in Central Square at the time.

They accused him of criminal sex act, rape and other charges, claiming he had sex with a girl who was 11 to 13 years old when the alleged sex took place between June, 2010 and September, 2011 at a home in the town of Hastings.

Monday, police charged him with two more felonies: criminal contempt and bribing a witness.

Undersheriff Gene Sullivan said Roof allegedly gave the victim a cell phone in exchange for the victim’s refusal to testify against him.  He called the cell phone, police alleged, violating an order of protection against him.

Roof, 34, now living at 26279 Middle Rd., Watertown, was sent to the Oswego County Jail on bail of $40,000 cash or $90,000 bond.

He is due in Hastings town court on Friday.
