Catholic Charities Of Oswego County Closes CYO

FULTON, NY– Catholic Charities of Oswego County, (CCOC), recently closed its CYO facilities because of diminishing youth participation and the financial drain on operating costs attempting to keep it open, said Mary-Margaret Pekow, CCOC executive director.

“The activities offered by the CYO have been a beloved staple for generations and it is with great regret that we have been forced to close,” Pekow said. “The numbers of youth who have participated have sharply dropped off in the past few years, and we can no longer sustain offering the services without running a deeper deficit. The program has been operating at a deficit for several years and the cost of staffing, overhead, and low numbers led us and our board to make this hard decision.

“This action allows us to focus on the many other programs we are offering that cover their operating costs and eliminates the struggle we have been dealing with trying to keep the CYO open,” said Alexandra Fitzpatrick, CCOC board president. “We will continue our outreach to youth with our extremely successful family fun nights that have brought hundreds of families to Catholic Charities.  We offer these free activities quarterly.”

Pekow said: “We will continue to offer our food pantry, thrift store, Family Resource Center, parent education, health home care management, family time visitation services, transportation support services and other community services that address the needs of so many individuals in our county.”
