OSWEGO COUNTY – According to the Oswego County Health Department, as of 3 p.m., there have been 132 additional cases of novel coronavirus (COVID-19) and five more county residents have died since Thursday, December 31.

New cases yesterday (Friday): 72

New cases today: 60

There are 1,123 known active cases across the county as of today.

The county did not release the numbers yesterday due to the holiday.

“We are sad to report that we have lost five more of our residents to COVID-19,” said Oswego County Public Health Director Jiancheng Huang. “I would like to express our condolences to the families and friends of both of these patients.”

Huang also reviewed the ongoing increase in COVID-19 positive cases.

“We are 10 times where we were just two months ago,” Huang said. “The numbers we report are not merely statistics. They are our family members, friends and neighbors, and they represent the sad and indisputable fact that this disease is rampant in our communities. As we begin 2021, we have a renewed sense of hope in the arrival of new vaccines. I urge everyone to remain vigilant in their protection practices and follow all COVID-19 protocols. These are still the best ways to protect the whole community.”

Today’s statistics are below:

Oswego County: (as of 3 p.m.) Note, the total number of positive cases is cumulative since March and the number of recoveries and deaths are of those numbers. SUNY Oswego cases are included in the county numbers, however, the county tracks only those living in Oswego County. That means that students who chose to leave and go back to their home county and test positive there will be included on the college’s dashboard, but not the county’s. Their positive result would be reported to their home county, not here.
