DEC Opens Lower Salmon River Fly Fishing Area in Altmar

ALTMAR — The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation announced Oct. 28, 2026, that the lower fly fishing section of the Salmon River is open to public fishing.

The section extends upstream from the Route 52 bridge in Altmar to the property boundary of the Salmon River Fish Hatchery.

According to DEC, the section did not open as scheduled Sept. 15 to increase the probability that enough salmon would reach the hatchery to sustain the salmon stocking program. The area is located just below the hatchery, where large numbers of salmon and anglers typically congregate.

With the hatchery’s annual egg take complete, the section is once again open to public fishing, DEC said.

Anglers can use the “Tackle Box” feature in the HuntFishNY app for waterbody-specific information about fishing regulations, stocking, and fishing and boating access sites.

Additional information, including the I FISHNY Great Lakes Fishing Brochure, is available on DEC’s website.
