Drowning in Oneida Lake

OSWEGO COUNTY – On Sunday, June 16th, 2024, at around 9:51 AM, members of the Oswego County Sheriff’s Office Marine Patrol were on Oneida Lake, near the pier located just south of the Waterfront Tavern in the Town of Hastings, when they came across two people in the water that were in distress.

The Oswego County Sheriff’s Marine Patrol were able to rescue one of the two individuals, identified as Wattie Cappers, 42 years of age, from Syracuse NY.  Wattie was transported to Upstate Hospital and is in stable condition.

Members of Brewerton Fire Department arrived on scene to assist and were able to locate the other individual in distress, Anthony Davis, 44 years of age, from Clay, NY.  Anthony was pulled from the water by a diver with the Brewerton Fire Department.   Anthony was transported to Upstate Hospital and was later pronounced dead there.

Investigation has revealed that Wattie, Anthony, and another male were fishing for Father’s Day, when Anthony’s keys fell in the water.  Anthony attempted to get his keys but was unable to make it back to land.  Wattie jumped in to rescue Anthony but was also unable to make it back to land.  Shortly after, the Oswego County Sheriff’s Marine Patrol arrived on scene after hearing the yelling for help.

The Oswego County Sheriff’s Office were assisted on-scene by the New York State Police, Brewerton Fire Department, Onondaga County Sheriff’s Office, Central Square Police Department, Caughdenoy Volunteer Fire Department, West Monroe Volunteer Fire Department, and Parish Volunteer Fire Department.
