PHOENIX, NY – The Phoenix Central School District Superintendent Christopher Byrne announced today, October 30, that all in-person instruction at Emerson J. Dillon Middle School will be moved to virtual learning only for the next two weeks.

The announcement came after the district was informed a 5th grade student at the middle school had tested positive for COVID-19. Byrne said he anticipates some students and staff will need to be quarantined.

In-person learning for 5th and 6th graders will continue Monday, November 16.

Byrne said the district is working closely with the Oswego County Health Department to ensure all proper contact tracing safety steps are taken.

“In the event you are contacted by a health department representative, we encourage you to offer your complete corporation,” Byrne said in a letter to the district community. “Please understand that we can’t provide any additional information about this student due to confidentiality and privacy constraints.”

He said teachers who are currently teaching in-person will provide the information for virtual learning plans to parents and students as soon as possible and recommended to reach out to the student’s principal with questions regarding virtual learning.

He encourages parents to contact their healthcare provider if they notice any symptoms of COVID-19 in their family (fever, cough, loss of taste/smell, fatigue/feeling of tiredness, sore throat, shortness of breath, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, muscle pain, body aches, headaches, nasal congestion and runny nose.)

The County Health Department can be reached at 315-349-3330.
