Fatal Fire in Oswego County

Yesterday morning, March 15^th, 2026, at around 9:21 AM, members of the Oswego County Sheriff’s Office were dispatched to a structure fire at 197 Durgee Roadin the Town of Orwell.

When first responders arrived, the mobile home had already collapsed.  Preliminary investigation revealed there was one occupant in the home at the time of the fire and that person’s body was recovered under debris.  The victim was identified as Joseph Thompson.  Joseph was 56 years old and resided at the residence.

Foul play is not suspected; however, this incident is still under investigation.

The Oswego County Sheriff’s Office was assisted on scene by the Orwell Volunteer Fire Department, the Oswego County Fire Coordinator’s Office, The Oswego County District Attorney’s Office, and Menter Ambulance.
