CENTRAL SQUARE, NY – After sending out my letter to all parents/guardians and staff members earlier today, the middle school received a few phone calls from parents wanting to know why we would even pick up a student that could potentially have made a threat of harming others. When our Transportation Department received the phone call from the parent informing us of the threat that was brought to her attention on social media, the student that allegedly made the threat was already on the school bus almost to the middle school.
We are so impressed with how quickly our Special Patrol Officers joined Officer Malecki, (the SPO at CSMS), along with middle school administrators and District Office administrators to be there when the bus arrived, only minutes after the concerned parent reported the alleged threat. If we ever were to receive information similar to today about a student making an alleged or perceived threat, we have protocols established where we would never pick up the student and instead law
enforcement and administration would go directly to their house. We wanted to send this out just in case others were thinking the same thing and hopefully this additional letter helps calm your concerns.
We are very fortunate at Central Square to have a supportive Board of Education that long ago recognized the need to have a Special Patrol Officer in all six of our schools that are highly trained to handle situations such as this. We are fortunate to work in a school district that is home to so many police officers, fire fighters, and first responders that truly understand the value in helping others, which is one major characteristic that connects all of our individual communities across the District. We are so grateful for all of those that serve in law enforcement. Thank you for your attention to this matter.
Sincerely,
Thomas J. Colabufo
Superintendent
