FULTON, NY – The Fulton Police Department will host a presentation this month by Meredith Wiley, co-author of Ghosts in the Nursery: Tracing the Roots of Violence, an eye-opening book that explores the impact of early child abuse and neglect on child development and crime.
Where are so many violent children coming from and what can we do to stem the tide? While the causes of violence are complex and multifaceted, a growing body of scientific research shows that abuse and neglect in the earliest months and years of life often lead to violence in older children and adults.
Using a case study, Wiley will offer an overview of early brain development and what we know works to get kids off to a good start in life and place them on a path to school and life success. It will also explore the price to New York State and our nation for allowing epidemic levels of child abuse and neglect to continue unabated.
The presentation will be held at the Fulton War Memorial Nov. 28 from 8:30 to about 11:30 a.m. Details can be found on the department’s Web site at www.fultonpd.com (click on Child Abuse Seminar link from main page).
A registration form can also be downloaded from the Web site. Registration will cost $10 and checks can be made payable to “City of Fulton – Police.” The deadline for registration is Nov. 23.
