The Schroeppel Historical Society will host a presentation entitled, “Early Town of Schroeppel Landholders†at 7:00 PM on Thursday, June 19, 2008, at the Historical Society building, corner of Main and Volney Streets in Phoenix, New York. The presenter is Mr. Dean A. Biancavilla, AIA, preservation architect with the architectural firm of Holmes, King, Kallquist & Associates. Mr. Biancavilla, who is also an historical researcher and author, is a 1973 graduate of the John C. Birdlebough High School in Phoenix, New York.
Mr. Biancavilla’s information is derived from years of research on his yet unpublished work, Schroeppel: Statesmen, Steamboats and Speculatorsâ€â€Â1785 to 1830. His research began with the Oneida Indian Treaty of 1785 and New York State’s acquisition of lands east and north of the Oswego and Oneida Rivers. Noted landholders from Schroeppel’s past are: Nicholas Roosevelt, George Scriba, Stephen Lush, Daniel Phoenix, Ezra L’Hommedieu, Jacob Mark, Alexander Phoenix, George Casper Schroeppel, Richard Pennell and John Hinman. Mr. Biancavilla will share new and interesting data on these landholders, whose names
still define landmarks, villages, and towns in Oswego County.
Schroeppel Historical Society members invite the public to attend. Donations will go toward the operation, repair and maintenance of the historical society building, would be greatly appreciated. Call 695-6641 if you have questions.
