FULTON —On Friday, Bike 4 Briar had made it’s way to Fulton, NY, where they were welcomed at City Hall . Lunch was provided and a snack donation was made for their journey.
Bike 4 Briar is a heartfelt charitable initiative inspired by Briar, a young child diagnosed with Angelman Syndrome. To raise awareness and funds for this important cause, two dedicated cyclists will embark on an epic 4,300+ mile journey across the United States.
Riding from Anacortes, Washington, to Bar Harbor, Maine, Briar’s Uncle Charlie Nuck and Todd Downey, a lifelong fraternity brother and friend of Briar’s late grandfather, have pledged to take on this incredible challenge. Their mission is to shine a light on Angelman Syndrome and help fund research for a cure.
What is Angelman Syndrome?
Angelman Syndrome (AS) is a rare neurogenetic disorder affecting approximately 1 in 15,000 births, caused by the loss or malfunction of the UBE3A gene on chromosome 15. This leads to significant developmental delays, impaired motor coordination, and little to no speech. Despite these challenges, individuals with AS are known for their cheerful disposition, often smiling and laughing.
While there is no cure yet, scientists believe AS is one of the most promising neurogenetic disorders for treatment. Research is exploring gene therapy to activate the silent UBE3A gene, potentially reversing many symptoms and offering hope for those affected.
The Back Story
In April, we tragically lost Briar’s grandfather, John Nuck. To honor his memory and support a cause dear to him—finding a cure for Angelman Syndrome—his longtime fraternity brother, Todd Downey, founded Bike 4 Briar.
Todd committed to cycling 4,200 miles from Anacortes, Washington, to Bar Harbor, Maine, raising awareness and funds while honoring a 45-year friendship. When Briar’s adventure-loving Uncle Charlie heard about the ride, he eagerly joined the cause.
Starting June 1st, they will ride an average of 80 miles per day for two months. Their mission is not just about endurance and perseverance —it’s about hope, remembrance, and the fight for a cure!
